How to choose the correct veneer color shade for your skin complexion

Dr. Catrise Austin:

So Gil, you’re a color specialist. One of the questions that I wanted to answer is there tends to be a trend now, a big trend of these porcelain veneers being super white.

Gil Villavecer:

Oh yes.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

What do you think about that? And how do you go about choosing, let’s talk about how do you go about choosing the right color to someone’s complexion and smile?

Gil Villavecer:

Perfect. Good question. And you said it with social media, the internet, that’s what’s made the smile and cosmetic dentistry really so much more important today because in the past we take a picture. Oh, that’s nice. Now, what do we do? We go like this, we go like that until we see the teeth right there and they’ve got to be perfect. Right?

Dr. Catrise Austin:

They have to be perfect.

Gil Villavecer:

So the good news is the materials that we have available today are a lot better than they were even just 10 short years ago.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Always changing.

Gil Villavecer:

So what we’re able to do is we can accomplish those color shifts much easier because we have the materials and we can control them, and we have the artistry to be able to get what you want to make it look natural. Think of it this way. If something’s too white, it doesn’t look natural, right? So we want to find just that right balance where it’s white, bright, you come in a room, but somebody looks at you and go, “That’s a beautiful smile.”

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Yes.

Gil Villavecer:

Not, “Wow. Those look really fake.”

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Yeah.

Gil Villavecer:

So we’re able to control that. And when you asked about complexion, we use the latest tools to be able to measure shade where you are, where you want to get to. Is that achievable? Because in some cases it may not be depending on where we’re starting and that’s the best way is to be upfront and manage the expectations of the patients. In most cases we can, because the expertise of the dentist, the materials that we use, we’re able to give the patients what they want.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Well, my goal is always to make it look natural. If it’s cosmetic dentistry, you shouldn’t be able to tell that they have veneers.

Gil Villavecer:

Exactly.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

That’s like a good boob job, or butt job, you shouldn’t be able to tell. And that’s what I normally shoot for with the teeth.

Gil Villavecer:

Yeah.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

So I try to manage their expectations and guide the patient with the right color. Some of the celebs that I get, they want what they want because they’re on camera all the time, and they’re-

Gil Villavecer:

Right. And you want to talk about perfection when it’s on a magazine cover, it has to be perfect. And I think I read somewhere nine out of 10 celebs that show up on magazines actually have veneers because nature is not that perfect. Right?

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Right. So all you guys out there, if you think these stars and important people are born that way, no, they’d gotten veneers.

Gil Villavecer:

No. And we call it perfect by imperfections. Right?

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Yes.

Gil Villavecer:

If it’s too perfect, it’s going to look fake. We call it perfect by just little imperfections.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Little things.

Gil Villavecer:

Which shows that wow, she’s got natural teeth. Those are beautiful. What a great smile.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Yesterday, we were talking about translucency. Generally a tooth will be a little bit darker at the gum line, get a little bit wider, and then a little see-through or translucent at the biting edge.

Gil Villavecer:

Exactly.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

So if you see a tooth is just all white, it just doesn’t… It looks like a Chiclet.

Gil Villavecer:

It looks like a Chiclet. It looks like it came from a box is what we like to say.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

I don’t do Chiclets. We don’t do Chiclets. We pride ourselves in that.

Gil Villavecer:

That’s right.

Dr. Catrise Austin:

Great. Yeah.

Gil Villavecer:

Very good.
